Enduring life’s challenges with faith and hope

In his influential 1984 talk  “If Thou Endure It Well”,  Neal A. Maxwell addresses the theme of enduring life’s trials and tribulations with grace and faith. Elder Maxwell, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, draws on scriptural references, personal anecdotes, and his deep understanding of the gospel to teach and inspire his audience.

Elder Maxwell begins his address by emphasizing the importance of the word “endure” in the context of the gospel, pointing out that it appears over 50 times in the scriptures. He highlights the essential nature of enduring trials, explaining that it is a necessary process to refine our souls and prepare us for eternal life. Elder Maxwell notes that we all face various difficulties, including adversity, affliction, and temptation, and that we are expected to endure these challenges “well.”

He suggests that enduring well involves not just tolerating hardships but embracing them as opportunities for growth and learning. This perspective, Elder Maxwell says, allows us to better understand the Lord’s divine purposes and appreciate the blessings that accompany each trial.

Elder Maxwell then discusses the importance of maintaining faith in Jesus Christ, particularly during difficult times. He emphasizes that our faith should not waver, regardless of the circumstances we face, as Jesus has faced and conquered all things. He also cites several scriptural examples of individuals who exemplified unwavering faith during challenging times, such as Job, Paul, and Abinadi.

Elder Maxwell further explores the concept of enduring well by highlighting the importance of patience. He explains that true patience is not passive resignation but rather an active and vibrant process of trusting in God’s timing. He elaborates on the idea that patience involves submitting our will to the Lord and allowing Him to mold us into who we need to become.

In discussing the role of humility in enduring well, Elder Maxwell stresses that we must recognize our dependence on God and submit ourselves to His will. He notes that it is only when we acknowledge our own limitations and turn to God for help that we can receive divine assistance in overcoming our trials.

Elder Maxwell goes on to emphasize the importance of meekness, a Christlike attribute that allows us to yield to the Lord’s will and accept His chastening. He explains that meekness involves a willingness to learn from our trials and recognize the growth that results from these experiences.

Another crucial aspect of enduring well, according to Elder Maxwell, is maintaining hope. He explains that hope is essential in sustaining our faith and courage during trials, as it allows us to look beyond our current circumstances and trust in God’s promises. He reminds his audience of the hope that comes from Jesus Christ’s Atonement, which ensures that we can be forgiven of our sins and ultimately return to live with God.

Elder Maxwell also highlights the importance of charity, or the pure love of Christ, in enduring well. He explains that we must develop this divine love for others, as it enables us to better understand their struggles and provide support during their trials. Moreover, Maxwell notes that cultivating charity allows us to better empathize with the Savior, who suffered for our sins and infirmities.

Additionally, Elder Maxwell addresses the role of prayer in enduring well, emphasizing that we should not only petition God for help but also express gratitude for His blessings. He explains that by maintaining an attitude of thanksgiving, we can better recognize the Lord’s hand in our lives and find comfort in His love and mercy.

Elder Maxwell concludes his talk by sharing his testimony of Jesus Christ and encouraging his audience to seek the Savior’s help in enduring their trials well. He reiterates that through faith, patience, humility, meekness, hope, charity, and prayer, we can find the strength and support necessary to overcome the challenges we face. Ultimately, Maxwell assures his listeners that by enduring well, we can become more like Jesus Christ and prepare ourselves for eternal life in the presence of our Heavenly Father.

Throughout his talk, Neal A. Maxwell provides valuable insights and guidance on how to endure life’s trials and tribulations with grace and faith. By emphasizing the importance of Christlike attributes and consistent reliance on the Lord, Maxwell teaches us that enduring well is not only possible but also essential for our spiritual growth and progression.

In summary, Neal A. Maxwell’s 1984 talk “If Thou Endure It Well” emphasizes the importance of enduring life’s trials with faith, patience, humility, meekness, hope, charity, and prayer. He provides scriptural examples, personal anecdotes, and a deep understanding of the gospel to teach and inspire his audience to rely on the Lord and develop Christlike attributes in the face of adversity. By doing so, Elder Maxwell asserts that we can not only overcome our challenges but also become more like Jesus Christ and prepare ourselves for eternal life with our Heavenly Father. About the Author: Donald Keith

Hi, I'm Donald Keith (called Don by most). I have been interested in art and photography since a young age - even before my first art and photography classes in college back in the 1960's. Both art and photography were pretty much a spectator sport and just a hobby ( sometimes time consuming and expensive, but still just a hobby) over most of my life. I come from a heritage of artistic talents on both my maternal and paternal sides of my family. Some of my most cherished artistic treasures are those from close relatives past and present. As the father of six children and now many grandchildren, the creative and photo opportunities over the decades have been many and fun filled. I have always enjoyed nature and the outdoors. I have lived near, hiked and photographed and enjoyed immensely, much of the Canadian Rockies, the gorgeous San Juan Islands in the North West, the Rocky Mountains of Utah and the amazing colorful red rock country and canyons of southern Utah and Nevada. I have also lived and loved the incredible beauty of the Atlantic North East where in New York and New Jersey the bursting color of the red, purple, orange and florescent yellows of the hardwoods in the fall are absolutely stunning. I have seen fantastic breathtaking scenery all over the USA as well as being able to enjoy some of the countless wonders and awe inspiring vistas of remote Mexican Beaches, and mountains, lakes, shorelines and landscapes of France, Switzerland and Italy. I have also learned to love the amazing diversity this world offers in climate, terrain, landscape, animals, and (most importantly), the people from all walks of life and a wide spectrum of personalities. For the last 10 years or so I have had a chance to express these interests more formally and focus on my artistic self more seriously. Just within the last decade, have I decided to share, display and sell some of my pieces to the public - rather than keeping them to the realm of friends and family. I hope you find enjoyment and smiles as you peruse the site here. Perhaps you will take some of these pieces home to bring you and your loved ones some visual food for eternal smiles. In any case I wish for you, great blessings of beauty and peace on your journey in this amazing life ! Just For Fun, I'll share one of my poems with you in case you like that form of art too. When © by Don Keith 8-28-2001 When the sky is blue and the sun is shining, And life is sweet and no one's whining, When the computer works and the calls go through, And the lights turn green and the car's still new, When the shirts are pressed and the socks are matched, And the house is clean and the door was latched, When it's not too hot and it's never too cold, And the flowers grow and the junk gets sold, When the grass stays green and always is cut, And the neighbors are nice and control their mutt, When stores have no lines and you find what you need, And it costs you nothing – your children to feed, When the family's healthy and you're all feeling good, And you look in the mirror and see what you should, When everyone loves you and thinks that you're smart, And you've got lots of money and joy in your heart, When the night is warm and the moon is full, And the world's happy and you're in control, When your music plays and no one is screaming, Then, you're not living, friend – you're dreaming.
